Władysław Reymont

Nobel Prize 1924

1867-1925

Representative of “Young Poland” with realistic descriptions.

The Promised Land (1899) describes the development of the industrial city of Lodz, made into a film by Andrzej Wajda (1975).

Reymont - one of the leading Polish writers from "Young Poland"

In The Peasants (1902-1908), Reymont depicts life and customs in rural Poland in four volumes, with highly detailed descriptions of nature and human behaviour.

Made into a film several times, most recently in 2023 as an animated historical drama film.

The Peasants have been translated into numerous languages.

However, both the Polish and English texts are characterised by archaic and somewhat heavy language, so you might want to take a reading test before you buy to see if it suits your personal style.
