Mateusz Morawiecki

Former Prime Minister from PiS

Born in 1968. He was a bank manager until 2017 when he was hand picked for the post of Polish Prime Minister, where his main task was to quell the unrest in Brussels over the reforms implemented by the PiS government. Former Prime Minister Beata Szydło actually did well with the ruling party’s voters, but her somewhat colloquial and direct approach was unsuitable for smoothing out the differences in the EU.

Pension schemes

From 2010, he spent two years as an advisor to then Prime Minister Donald Tusk, advising him to raise the retirement age, which Tusk did. As Prime Minister, he has fiercely defended rolling back the retirement age, thus nullifying the changes made by Tusk’s government.

He presumably belongs to the moderate wing of PiS, but it is difficult to determine what Morawiecki actually believes, except that he is loyal to party chairman Kaczyński. However, he seems to be closely associated with the Catholic Church.

Here, Morawiecki speaks in English about press freedom, which he believes has been suppressed since the new government took office in 2023:
