Olga Tokarczuk is the great, active Polish writer who has received the Nobel Prize (2018) and is able to analyse Polish society and its development over centuries with both a certain distance and deep understanding. She is a left-winger in Polish politics and has criticised the totalitarian tendencies of the former PiS government.
The Books of Jacob
Her most significant work, in my opinion, is The Books of Jacob from 2014, which presents the Polish-Lithuanian Union in the 18th century in a historical account with an emphasis on the Jewish people.
Recent novels include “Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead” (2012), “House of Day, House of Night” (2014) and “Flights” (2016).
