Born in 1963. MA in political science and journalist. Married to Anne Applebaum – a prominent American journalist specialising in Eastern Europe and former editor of the Economist.
Sikorski studied in England and had a distinguished journalistic career as a war reporter in Afghanistan and Angola, and later as a political journalist, interviewing various statesmen.
He has been politically engaged throughout his life as a member of the Polish Upper House, Lower House and the European Parliament. Minister of Defence in the PiS government 2005-2007, after which he left PiS and joined the Civic Platform. Minister of Foreign Affairs 2007-2014 and Speaker of Parliament 2014-2015.
He is undoubtedly conservative in his outlook on life, but PiS will not forgive him for leaving the party in 2007. Has a cautious view on foreign policy, scepticism towards the US and favours close cooperation with Germany and France. He is also in favour of a federal Europe.
