Zbiegniew Ziobro
Former Minister of Justice and chairman of the “Sovereign Poland” club (in coalition with PiS)
Born in 1970. Lawyer an co-founder of Sovereign Poland, formerly Solidary Poland. Member of Sejm 2001-2009 and from 2015. Minister of Justice 2005-2007 and 2015 to 2023.
The hardliner wing
Ziobro is one of the former PiS government’s hardliners and has officially been the reason for the failure to reach an agreement with the EU on judicial reforms. Ziobro’s key issues are harsh punishments for criminals, opposition to political integration in Europe, opposition to immigrants and reforms that in practice have led to the politicisation of the judiciary.
Obsessed with the idea that his late father was mistreated
Ziobro has a harsh rhetoric and has been convicted for, among other things, stating as Minister of Justice that “that gentleman will never kill anyone again” about a doctor who was later acquitted of murder charges. Known for his strong dislike of lawyers and doctors, he believes his father died in 2006 as a result of medical malpractice. He has since prosecuted the doctors, and as Minister of Justice, he has initiated a review of the case, in which the doctors have been acquitted several times.
Leave due to illness
In January 2024, Ziobro temporarily stepped down from political activity in connection with cancer treatment.
